Free-Standing Mathematics Qualification

The Scheme

Candidates for AS:Use of Mathematics take two compulsory units: Working with algebraic and graphical techniques and Applying mathematics and one optional unit chosen from Modelling with calculus, Using and applying statistics, and Using and applying decision mathematics.

Each of the three units entered by a student as part of the AS is assessed separately.

For each of the units: Working with algebraic and graphical techniques, Modelling with calculus, Using and applying statistics and Using and applying decision mathematics assessment is by means of a portfolio as well as a written examination.
Each of these components contributes 50%.
For more detailed information click on Examination or Portfolio.

The terminal unit, Applying mathematics is assessed using:

  • a mathematical comprehension paper lasting one hour and worth 30 marks;
  • a further paper lasting one and a half hours and worth 70 marks
    that assesses students' ability to apply the new mathematical techniques they have learnt.

The marks from these papers are added to give an overall mark for the unit.

Grades
The marks for the three units are combined to give a final grade for the AS level.
The final pass grades are A, B, C, D, E.
