GCE A Level in Use of Mathematics – Plans for the pilot

A level Use of Mathematics will be comprised of an AS plus an A2. The structure of each of these is outlined below:

AS Use of Mathematics

FSMQ Algebra

plus any 2 of the following 5 FSMQs:

FSMQ Data Analysis
FSMQ Hypothesis Testing
FSMQ Dynamics
FSMQ Mathematical Principles for Personal Finance
FSMQ Decision Mathematics

Each of these will be assessed by a 1 hour written paper with pre-release data (calculators allowed). Note that FSMQ Data Analysis will not be a pre-requisite for FSMQ Hypothesis Testing (and vice-versa). These two units are independent of each other.

A2
This is comprised of three compulsory units:

FSMQ Calculus
assessed by 1 hour written paper with pre-release data (calculators allowed)

Mathematical Applications
Portfolio consisting of two pieces of work based on two of the units taken in the rest of the qualification - to be marked by the centre and moderated by AQA.

Mathematical Comprehension
assessed by 1½ hour written paper in two sections with pre-release data (calculator allowed)

Further details will be added to this website as they emerge.

The existing AS Use of Mathematics (5351) will continue, unchanged, until 2011 for those not involved in the pilot scheme.

Information on all the qualifications being piloted as part of the AQA 14─19 Curriculum Pathways Project in Mathematics is available from the AQA site.

If you wish to take part in any of the pilots contact AQA by e-mail mathspathways@aqa.org.uk or by telephone on 01483 477752.
