Rationale
Use of Mathematics was developed by the Qualifications and Curriculum Authority (QCA) to provide a more effective style of mathematics education at AS level for a large number of post-16 students.
Students are required to:
- work on substantial problems applying mathematics in contexts relating to their other studies;
- interpret and communicate the results of mathematical work;
- develop the ability to work independently with mathematics;
- apply Information and Communication Technology (ICT) as a tool in mathematical work.
The assessment of this qualification has two components, portfolio and written examinations, both of which will encourage students to apply mathematics to solve problems.
This qualification is distinctly different from other AS/A level maths courses, placing greater emphasis on application, understanding, reasoning and communication of mathematics and less on content.
