AQA Use of Mathematics

2.4

10.6

28.5

52.4

75.8

This pass rate is slightly lower than it was last year. The overall pass rate for all AS levels in Mathematics (available from the JCQ website) is .84.3%. The reason that this is higher than that for Use of Maths is likely to be mainly because of the different characteristics of the cohorts of students who are entered for these examinations. Until now students who wanted to continue to a full A level in mathematics had to opt for a more traditional course and those who chose AS: Use of Maths tended to be those who wished to study mathematics as a support subject. It is thought that many students who successfully completed the AS:Use of Maths course would be unlikely to have done so well in a more traditional AS mathematics course. However the pilot for a full A level in Use of Maths will begin in September. Hopefully this will mean that more able candidates opt for this alternative to the more traditional A level mathematics courses.
